Hall of Fame

Bert Cockcroft
'Bert' was the father of the Club. His membership dated from the very early years of its existence, being Captain in 1953 and President from 1967 to 1970 and his reminiscences invariably enlivened the company of members amongst whom his presence was always welcome. He was the first Scarcroft member to be honoured with a red coat, a distinction in this part of the world given to those who have held the office (1 in 1970) of Captain of Captains within the Society of Leeds Golf Club Captains.

Bob Sheridan
'Bob' was the Club's second 'red coat', being appointed Captain of Captains of the Society of Leeds Golf Club Captains in 1977. A past captain of Scarcroft (1965) and a past president (1975 to 1978) he was Chairman of the Development Committee of the Club from 1970 to 1985, guiding it through the major changes of recent years with conspicuous success.

Arthur Bell
Inside the Club he was Captain in 1955 and helped to initiate the early tree planting programme, and outside the Club his services were appropriately recognised in his appointment as President of the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs in 1957.

Jack Wheelhouse
Club Captain in 1967 and holding the office of President from 1978 to 1982, Jack’s activities also extended outside the Club and his worth was recognised in 1970 when he was elected President of the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs. In committee he was an enthusiastic debater, holding very positive views on the preservation of all the traditional aspects of the golf club properties.

Wilf Townsend
After several years on general committee where he placed he expert and specialists knowledge on care of the course unstintingly at the service of the Club mainly as Chairman of the Green Committee, 'Wilf' was elected Club Captain in 1969 and became President in 1984. During his year as Captain he successfully led a team to win the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs Second Division Team Championship for the first time in the Club's history. He served on the Council and Executive of the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs and was appointed President of Union in 1979.

Bill Atack
Club Captain in 1976, his tireless efforts to promote the well-being of the Club in its widest sense were recognised formally in 1985 by his election to the Office of Vice- President. For many years he was the Club's representative on the Leeds and District Union of Golf Clubs and he was appointed Secretary of that Union, retiring in 1986 after five years in office.

Mrs Enid Ward
Among our many distinguished lady members Enid Ward added to her several club successes that demonstrated her undoubted skills at the ancient and honourable game, the honour of being Captain of the Veteran Ladies Golf Association (Yorkshire Branch) in 1979/80. She was Captain of the Ladies Section in 1962 and Handicap Secretary from 1964 to 1984.

Bill Hembry
The outstanding golfing achievement of the Club to date goes without doubt to 'Bill' Hembry who in 1946 became the Yorkshire County Champion. In addition to his talents as a golfer he was a strong influence within the Club management, introducing many improvements to the course as Green Chairman and as Captain in 1947. He became a Vice-President in 1956.

Bill Byers
Bill Byers represented the real backbone of British Golf - the Rabbit. For more years than any present member can visualise Bill championed the cause of the higher handicap player. He never sought traditional golf club honours being content to encourage and sponsor the interests of those without whom all golf clubs would surely founder. His work in this field was rewarded by the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association which made him President both in 1963 and 1964.
